In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, the role of parents in guiding children’s online lives has become increasingly complex, particularly in international school settings where cultural diversity and global perspectives add layers of complexity. I have worked internationally for many years – as a toddler throwing a tantrum can be in Canada or Canberra and for parents, wherever they are in the world, they all experience the same sense frustration, exhaustion, embarrassment, anger, discouragement, hopelessness and overwhelm !
Then I started getting lots of parents around the world asking me about screentime, social media and smartphones so I started the “Navigating the Digital Jungle with Sue Atkins and Friends” podcast because I saw firsthand how overwhelming technology can be for families. As a parenting author, broadcaster & coach I’ve spent years helping parents find balance, but I realised that the digital age brings its own unique set of challenges.
The turning point came during countless conversations with parents who were struggling to manage their kids’ screen time, handle social media pressures, and address issues like cyberbullying.
They were searching for practical advice and support but often felt lost in the digital maze.
I knew I had to do something more, particularly after reading Jonathan Haidt ‘s book ‘The Anxious Generation’ & that’s why I launched the ‘Navigating the Digital Jungle with Sue Atkins and Friends’ podcast. 🎧
I wanted to create a space where we could dive deep into these pressing issues, share expert advice, and hear from other parents facing similar challenges.
My goal is to offer tangible strategies and support so that families can not only navigate the complexities of today’s tech world, but also thrive within it.
Each episode is a reflection of my commitment to helping families build stronger, healthier relationships with technology, and I’m excited to share this journey with you.

Understanding the Unique Challenges for International School Communities
International schools cater to a diverse population of students and families from all over the world. This brings exciting opportunities for cultural exchange but also challenges when it comes to establishing a common approach to digital literacy and safety. Parents may have different perspectives on screen time, social media, privacy, and online safety, shaped by their home countries’ regulations and norms.
For parents, balancing technology’s opportunities with its potential risks can be overwhelming, especially when they are also navigating the pressures of relocation, adjusting to new cultures, or managing children’s academic expectations in a global setting.
This is where my expertise as a former Deputy Headteacher and Class Teacher for 25 years can help and where the Navigating the Digital Jungle platform comes in.
How Navigating the Digital Jungle Can Help
1. Practical, Inclusive Guidance for Parents Across Cultures
I’m very lucky to have built a reputation as a trusted parenting coach, known for my practical, non-judgmental advice. My Navigating the Digital Jungle initiative, which includes both a book, a podcast and a wealth of resources, tackles a wide range of issues faced by modern parents, from managing screen time to addressing the impact of social media on children’s mental health.
For international schools, my approach is particularly beneficial because it’s culturally sensitive and adaptable. I understand that families from different parts of the world may have distinct views on technology. My resources guide schools in creating inclusive conversations around digital literacy that resonate with diverse parent communities. This is key for international schools, where unity around shared values, particularly concerning digital behaviour, is essential.
2. Fostering Digital Dialogue Between Parents and Teens
One of the critical elements of my work is helping parents engage in constructive, open conversations with their children about the digital world. My forthcoming book, ‘Navigating the Digital Jungle – Scripts to Start Important Conversations for Parents of Toddlers, Tweens and Teens around Smartphones, Social Media, FOMO, AI, Cyberbullying, Gaming, and more’ is designed to empower parents to have meaningful discussions about challenging topics such as cyberbullying, social media pressure, AI, gaming, and even issues like online pornography.
For international schools, these conversation starters can help bridge cultural gaps, giving parents from all backgrounds the confidence to talk to their children about their online experiences in a way that feels respectful and effective. This creates a more cohesive community where families feel supported, regardless of their cultural or national origins.
3. Supporting Well-Being in the Digital Age
International school students often face unique pressures, including frequent relocations, adjusting to new environments, and keeping up with peers back home or in other parts of the world through social media. The Navigating the Digital Jungle platform addresses the mental health aspects of digital usage, emphasising the importance of creating healthy boundaries and promoting digital well-being.
By offering schools actionable strategies and resources to share with parents, my guidance can help international school communities foster a balanced approach to technology. This is particularly important for expatriate families, where maintaining mental well-being during periods of transition is crucial for both parents and children.
4. Customisable Workshops and Training for Parents
Another way the Navigating the Digital Jungle platform can support international schools is through tailored workshops, webinars, and training sessions. These can be customised to meet the specific needs of international school communities, whether they’re focused on cybersecurity, managing social media, AI or addressing the digital challenges unique to expatriate families.
By collaborating with international schools, the platform can offer solutions that resonate with the particular demographics of each school, ensuring that parents receive relevant, up-to-date guidance in the context of the ever-changing digital landscape.
Creating a Unified Digital Literacy Strategy for International Schools
International schools have a unique opportunity to lead the way in supporting parents in the digital age, and working with me through the Navigating the Digital Jungle platform offers a clear path to success. By providing culturally sensitive resources, fostering open dialogue, and promoting digital well-being, my approach helps international schools create a unified strategy around digital literacy that benefits both parents, students and the whole family.
In a world where digital technology is constantly evolving, the need for international schools to help parents navigate the digital jungle has never been greater. Let’s work together to guide families through it.
