Once Upon a Time with ChatGPT: How AI is Changing the Way We Tell Bedtime Stories to Kids.

I was fascinated to learn about using AI-generated bedtime stories by reading an interesting post from Chris Holloway on LinkedIn.

Bedtime stories are a magical part of childhood. They transport kids to faraway lands, introduce them to lovable characters, and even teach valuable & important moral life lessons.

Tucking your little one in with a story before sleep not only calms and relaxes them, but also has a myriad of benefits including improving language development, imagination, and even fostering a love for reading as well as building happy memories that last a lifetime.

Interestingly ChatGPT, the innovative AI chat tool is here to take bedtime stories to the next level!

Imagine having an endless library of new and exciting stories to choose from every night! It’s time to say goodbye to the same old bedtime tales and hello to a whole new world of bedtime story adventures with ChatGPT ?

I decided to explore.

As a little girl my Dad made up fabulous stories – and I only discovered many years later as a Mum that the adventures of Capern were actually based on bird seed that my Dad bought for the garden !

I found in this really interesting reddit post, where a busy parent found a creative solution for coming up with bedtime stories for their 5-year-old child. The child loved hearing made-up stories before bed, but the parent often struggled to come up with new ideas after a long day of work. To solve this problem, the parent decided to try using ChatGPT.

As the founder of #TheSueAtkinsBookClub where I celebrate, welcome & promote diversity & inclusion it got me pondering about whether unconsciously creating stories using ChatGPT may raise some ethical concerns like potential bias in the stories, a possible lack of original creativity and risk of detaching from the wonderful bonding and connection of holding, touching & turning the pages of a family favourite.

But as I’ve become known for (thanks to my dear old Dad) – it’s all about balance.

As we continue to see advancements in AI, we can expect to see even more exciting and innovative ways in which technology can enhance the traditional bedtime story experience & I think embracing new technology like AI-generated bedtime stories is a brilliant innovation but I also think it’s important to use AI within your story mix & balance it with human interaction.

Here’s the story it wrote – totally fascinating!

I should have put in they were spaniels ?

It wrote in nano seconds this:

Once upon a time, there was a young girl named Sue. Sue loved animals, especially dogs. She had three loyal &  loving dogs, Rosie, Charlie, & Freddie. They were all different in their own way, Rosie was a Golden Retriever, Charlie was a Beagle, and Freddie was a Dachshund.

Every night before bed, Sue would read to her dogs. They would all cuddle up together and listen to her stories. But one night, Sue couldn’t find her favorite book, so she decided to make up her own story.

She told her dogs about a magical kingdom, where dogs were the rulers. In this kingdom, there were no leashes and no fences, dogs could run and play as much as they wanted. There were also delicious bones and treats, everywhere you looked.

Sue’s dogs listened intently as she described the different characters in her story. There was a wise old Labrador Retriever, who was the leader of the kingdom, a brave German Shepherd, who protected the kingdom from danger, and a playful Poodle, who was always getting into mischief.

As the story went on, Sue’s dogs started to feel like they were actually in the magical kingdom. They barked, wagged their tails, and even closed their eyes as if they were dreaming about it.

When the story was over, Sue’s dogs were so tired that they fell asleep right away. Sue kissed them goodnight and went to bed, feeling happy that her dogs enjoyed her bedtime story.

From that night on, Sue made up new stories every night and her dogs couldn’t wait to hear them. They all lived happily ever after, cuddling and listening to Sue’s bedtime stories.

The End.
