The Behaviour Blogs Part 2 – Updating Your Toolbox
Posted by: Sue Atkins
Successful parents have a wide range of options open to them.
Over the years (through often trial and error) they have collected skills, strategies and techniques that they have stored away for possible use.
A metaphor I use a lot when I’m giving my Lunch & Learn One Hour Talks is to imagine that you are carrying a toolkit around with you so that ideas are always available to you.
When you need something you can just poke about inside and pull out a useful tool to help you.
Just like real toolboxes, mental ones also gather dust and rust so things fall out.
So you need to regularly empty out and dump, unhelpful or old techniques that didn’t work and you need to replenish, re polish and acquire new ones that do !
It’s also a good idea to keep looking out for what other parents are doing successfully too so you can model or copy them. They don’t mind because they won’t even know !
The parent with the most options open to them is the most relaxed, calm and confident person in the world!
It’s all about being inquisitive and curious and to be keen to keep learning, exploring and trying new things out so you have the widest range of options and choices in your toolbox no matter what situation you find yourself in.
So just for this week keep an eye out for the great things other parents are doing and try out their technique.
Let me know how you get on …. as I’d love to hear your stories.
