The Baby Blogs. Day 6 – Preparing Your Older Child for Your New Arrival

Having a new baby is very exciting but your older child may worry about what all the changes may mean to them as for the last year or two they have probably been the centre of your universe so it’s a good idea to prepare them for this exciting new arrival.

Pregnancy Preparations

Tip 6. Include your child.

Take your older child along to pre – natal check-ups with you so they can hear your baby’s heartbeat and watch the ultrasound pictures.

When the baby kicks, let them touch your tummy and introduce themselves to their new brother or sister – it starts the bonding process early on.  Some hospitals now have classes for expectant siblings, so they can learn with other children what a new baby is like.

It’s important to include your little one in all the preparations so they feel excited, included and part of the new arrival. Play games with dolls, like Baby Annabell or their favourite cuddly to get the conversation opening up around what to expect.

Talk and Teach your older child about new-born babies and how to feed, bath,  or soothe them so they know what to expect and keep filling up their self esteem by praising, celebrating and sharing all their successes and milestones along the way too.
