Divorcing parents delude themselves about the effect on children.

Divorced parents are often in denial about how badly the break-up has damaged their children, a survey has found.

More than three quarters believed their children had ‘coped well’ – even though just 18 per cent of youngsters said they were happy with the situation.

Many parents fail to notice that their children are turning to drink and drugs, or even considering suicide, the poll found. Some were insensitive enough to break the news of the divorce to their children by text.

This Friday 3rd January is  commonly known as Divorce D-Day as Lawyers across the country are bracing themselves for ‘Divorce Friday’, which this year falls on January 3.

Traditionally, the first day legal offices open after the festive breakis the busiest day of the year for divorce enquiries.

Many firms have already announced they expect divorces to spike as many people have already made appointments for the first working week of 2014.

When a marriage becomes troubled, a couple often relies on old habits of interacting, which lead to fights rather than solutions. If those old habits didn’t lead to constructive solutions during the marriage, they’ll surely reap no better results during the divorce.

Bitter fights in the divorce courts often stem from these old ways of handling differences and while you may not have been a united front while married, you and your partner must take this opportunity for the good of your children to work together to find ways to nurture them through this time of change.
