Why begin Teaching Reading through Games?

As a former Deputy Head and Class Teacher for 22 years teaching children to read is a vital life skill that I feel very passionate about – as kids who can’t read lack confidence, lack opportunities and are disempowered in all areas of life.

I used to teach Reception children for a number of years and still have hugely fond memories of teaching my 35 five year olds to read. There are many ways to make learning fun but my advice is to read plenty of stories to your child from a very young age, sing nursery rhymes with them and ask your kids open – ended questions about what they read to develop their comprehension and their vocabulary.

My top tip ….. hear your children read little ….. and often.

15 minutes every day is FAR better than an hour once a week !

I am also supporter of the  The London Evening Standard’s “Get London Reading” Campaign.

Top Marks is an excellent site that has some fabulous ideas to help you teach, support and nurture your child’s reading skills so go and explore their fab materials !

There are wonderful games on the market for helping to make reading a fun, relaxed activity and I particularly like the games from Orchard Toys
