Don’t Stew – Ask Sue Parenting Q & A

Q. Dear Sue my two kids love to game and spend hours doing it every day. But I got a credit card bill of £140 as the game is registered in my name. Is there any way to stop them spending on add ons. I’m fed up with them gaming all the time but I don’t want them to be different from the other kids at school. Georgia Petersham from Newcastle
Q. Sue we want to take a holiday this year as my hubby hasn’t been well and we’d like to travel during term time as it’s expensive during the usual Summer Holidays but we’re worried about the fine and the judgement the school will make about us. What’s your advice? Fiona Hansard from Liverpool.
A.

Answer

Head teachers have to report absences (authorised and unauthorised) to the LEA (the council responsible for education in their area). It’s the LEA that can fine parents £60 for taking their child on holiday without permission. The fine’s per child, per absence (and in theory each parent can be fined, though it varies).

After too many unexcused absences, the school is required to notify the parent. A compulsory attendance notification will be sent to the parent if a student has unexcused absences on 10 or more days or parts of days within a six-month period or three days or parts of days during a four-week period.

Exceptional Circumstances are events or problems which you did not expect and which stop you being able to perform to the best of your abilities in your studies. For example, bereavement, unexpected personal or family problems or illness might be considered as an exceptional circumstance.

I’d go and talk to the school about your husband’s illness and find out if that is an exceptional circumstance.
