Don’t Stew – Ask Sue Parenting Q & A

Q. My 3 year old wants to choose what she wears each day & we’re having terrible battles around stopping her wearing her princess dress with a woolly hat and wellies, or some days her ballet dress and fairy wings with flip flops. One week all she wanted to do was wear was her brother’s dragon suit. What’s your advice? Melanie Barnet for Manchester
Q. My son had a friend round to play the other day and he was really rough with our dog. I wasn’t sure what to do. So, I told him to be more gentle but I was worried he’d go home and tell his Mum I told him off. What’s your advice? Esther Rodriquez from Barcelona

Disciplining other people’s children is tricky. Parents can be protective of their own kids, and take a personal affront when others discipline their kids. Clear communication is the key. Here are some guidelines to help:

House rules apply. Make sure their kids stick by your rules in your house.

Deal with misbehaviour directed at you.

Check with the other parent if you are unsure if their child’s behaviour is inappropriate.

Keep your discipline in line with methods generally acceptable in child-care centres and schools.
