The Summer Play Challenge
‘A Play A Day Keeps Boredom Away’
The Speech Bubble team have developed Summer Play Challenges for children aimed at Early Years Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.
Each Challenge includes some useful games and advice, plus a timetable of activities to do with children at home; you will not need lots of equipment and they are inexpensive to take part in.
Each play has been carefully designed to meet the child’s needs at every age/stage of development.
The Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 Play Challenges have been designed to encourage play as you run through your daily routine. The play challenge encourages learning, develops vocabulary, supports understanding of the world, expand on ideas, develop phonological awareness skills and pre-literacy skills.
For example, at bath time we encourage parents to explore messy play. As it’s in the bath the children can experiment but tidy up time is easier and quicker. Sensory play in the bathtub is a safe way for children to learn about concepts (such as sink vs float), develop and test their own ideas and learn about cause effect relationships. The play challenge also creates opportunities for learning life skills such as planning a meal/following a recipe and healthy eating as well categorisation and phonological awareness.
The Key Stage 2 Play Challenge does all of the above too but is slightly different as the activities have been organised by area of development rather than daily routines.
Each play activity has been specifically designed to develop/support memory, understanding, critical thinking skills and increase depth and breadth of vocabulary knowledge. The games are fun and specifically target speech, language and communication development.
