The Baby Blogs. Day 14 – Preparing Your Older Child for Your New Arrival
Posted by: Sue Atkins
Having a new baby is very exciting but your older child may worry about what all the changes may mean to them as for the last year or two they have probably been the centre of your universe so it’s a good idea to prepare them for this exciting new arrival.
Tip 14.Daddy, daddy, daddy!
You’ll need to spend more time with your new baby. So it’s important that while your older child feels they have lost some of mummy, it’s great because they get more of dad.
This is also the stage when a toddler may feel that mummy is no fun anymore, since she is tired all the time! (Sibling rivalry comes at a bad time for parents: Just as you are exhausted from adjusting to a new baby, you have to deal with your older child undergoing a personality change as they struggle for more independence)
Enter Dad with fun, treats, outings to the park, the ice creams, even trips to the toy shop.
Remember that kids spell LOVE T-I-M-E so don’t spoil them with gifts – lavish them with time.
Reserve these 1-2-1 outings just for your older child and watch your relationship bloom and remember that in children’s perception of love; actions often speak louder than words.
